No other coffee-growing country has a geology quite like Guatemala's. The Pacific Ring of Fire runs directly beneath the western highlands, creating a chain of active and dormant volcanoes that have shaped the land for millennia — and with it, a soil profile unlike anything found in Africa or Southeast Asia.

The volcanic ash deposited by Fuego and its neighbors is rich in silica, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus — nutrients that feed coffee plants and concentrate flavor in every cherry. The pumice-like soil texture creates excellent drainage, forcing roots deeper to find water and extracting more mineral complexity along the way.
